27 Main Street Siasconset

Atlantic House, at 27 Main Street in Siasconset, was built in 1848 as one of the first hotels to cater to the burgeoning summer resort industry on Nantucket. In the 1920s, the former hotel was repositioned on the property and renovated to be a private residence by Martha and David Gray, noted benefactors of Nantucket. Today, it is the home of Samantha and Matthew Fremont-Smith. Samantha’s parents, Sherry and Don Lourie, purchased the property in 1969, and placed a preservation restriction on the home’s façade and exterior grounds, held by the Sconset Trust. After assuming ownership of the property in 2009, the Fremont-Smiths completed a sensitive restoration in keeping with the home’s history, working with Chris Dallmus of Design Associates and Mark Godfrey of Godfrey Construction, Inc. The gardens feature a 1920s-era greenhouse and have played host for generations of memories for the Lourie and Fremont-Smith families. In 2011, Nantucket Preservation Trust awarded the John A. and Katherine Lodge Stewardship Award to the Fremont-Smith Family.
